Run an 18 or 20v lithium power tool battery in your Peg Perego, Kid Trax, Power Wheels or other brand ride-on. This module solves the two big problems people run into when they wire a lithium battery in.
What it does
- Low-voltage cutoff. Many tool batteries don't have one. If you over-discharge a lithium battery it won't charge again and may catch fire. At 15.5 volts the LED lights up and an alarm sounds. When the voltage drops below 15 volts for 60 seconds the power shuts off. Make sure this voltage minimum is within your battery manufacturer's guidelines.
- Soft start. The initial "punch" a lithium battery sends through the motors, gears and switches normally destroys them. The module gradually applies power to the wheels over a few seconds if it senses too much amperage surge. A regular voltage reducer won't stop the initial punch and it limits top speed. With this module you keep the same top speed, and the wheels can still spin on pavement. In high traction areas the module limits the initial amperage surge that does the damage, and that's where you'll see reduced wheel spin.
Common questions
Do I also need a speed controller?
No. This module does the soft start and the low voltage cutoff. If your vehicle came with a speed controller you will continue to use it. Adding a speed controller to a car that doesn't use one is optional, only if you want a variable speed pedal and braking: Ride-On Speed/Brake Control v2.0.
Does it work with the Titan speed control?
Yes. The Titan runs 18-20v tool batteries only with this module fitted.
Can I use a 24v lithium battery?
No. This module only works with 18-20v lithium batteries. Any higher and it will fail. On a 24v car, stay with an 18-20v tool battery through this module (although the car will be slower with less voltage).
Which battery brands does it work with?
Pick your adapter when you order: Black & Decker, DeWalt, Makita, Milwaukee or Ryobi. If you use your own adapter it MUST have 14 gauge wire or larger. Smaller wire can lead to failure or fire.
Before you use lithium batteries
- A cheap or old battery may swell or even catch fire, with or without this module. A ride-on car has a high amperage demand, and the heavier the car or the tougher the terrain, the higher it gets. If the battery can't supply it, bad things can happen. This module won't prevent that.
- You still need motors and gears capable of 18-20 volts of power.
- The soft start is not adjustable.
- Running 2 lithium batteries in parallel may overpower the module from the increased discharge rating and is not warrantied. Do not use batteries with variable voltage.
- Secure the battery holder and the module to the car with double-sided tape, screws, hot glue or whatever works for you. Bouncing electronics is never a good idea. The larger the space, the better the module will cool.
- Lithium batteries usually have a much lower amperage rating than an SLA battery. Stock Power Wheels batteries are 9.5 amps. The lower the amperage, the less run time you'll get, and increasing voltage reduces run time too. We still prefer SLA batteries for kids to get the most fun out of ride-ons for this reason.
- Not waterproof.
- Unplug when not in use.
