Moderno Ride-On Vehicle Upgrades: How to Make the Moderno Ride-On Lineup Faster

Moderno makes a range of ride-on toys, including 24 volt models like the Can-Am Maverick X3, Can-Am Outlander, Can-Am Renegade, Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, and Mercedes G63. They're a lot of fun straight out of the box, and ML Toys carries parts that take them further, including faster motors and gearboxes, upgraded speed controllers, longer-lasting batteries, lights, safety harnesses, and accessories that give each model a little more personality.

Many of these parts are shared across Moderno models, so planning a build is straightforward. This guide covers what each upgrade does, what to check on your model before you order, and what a complete build costs.

Which Moderno Ride-Ons Can You Upgrade?

This guide focuses on five Moderno ride-on vehicles with confirmed upgrade parts at ML Toys, and all five run on 24 volts from the factory. If you have a different Moderno, compare its gearboxes and speed controller to the product details below, since several of these parts are matched by gearbox style and plug type rather than by model name.

The Moderno 24V Can-Am Maverick X3 4x4 UTV is a two-seat side-by-side with 15" rubber tires, rear spring suspension, and a parent remote, and it's sold in both 2WD and 4WD versions. The Moderno Can-Am Outlander is a 4WD kids' ATV for ages 3 to 8 that seats one or two riders and comes with a 24V 7Ah battery pack. The Moderno Can-Am Renegade is a smaller quad for ages 3 to 6 with EVA wheels and a switch that lets kids choose between 4WD for grass and 2WD for flat ground.

On the car side, the Moderno Lamborghini Aventador SVJ is a 24 volt sports car for kids 3 and up, and the Moderno 24V Mercedes G63 rounds out the lineup. You'll find all of these alongside other imported ride-ons in our Amazon brands collection.

Model Stock voltage Drive Good to know
Can-Am Maverick X3 UTV 24V 2WD or 4WD version Two seats, 15" rubber tires, parent remote
Can-Am Outlander 24V 4WD Ages 3 to 8, one or two riders, 24V 7Ah battery
Can-Am Renegade 24V 4WD/2WD switch Ages 3 to 6, EVA wheels
Lamborghini Aventador SVJ 24V Upgrades don't fit drift or brushless motor versions
Mercedes G63 24V All wheel drive Same upgrade path as the rest of the lineup

What Makes a Moderno Ride-On Faster?

The fastest way to add speed to any Moderno is to upgrade the motors, gearboxes, and speed controller together. Our most popular upgrade across the whole lineup is the Paragon motor gearboxes paired with the Titan speed control, plus a 35 amp breaker to handle the extra current.

All three parts matter because they work as a team. Stronger motors and gearboxes can only go as fast as the stock electronics let them, and on most imported ride-ons the factory speed controller holds them back. Swapping the controller lets the new motors use the power they're built for, and the breaker keeps the stock one from tripping every time the car pulls hard. If your Moderno has started feeling slow compared to when it was new, our post on why a ride-on goes slow can help you rule out a worn battery or loose connection first.

Paragon 775 Motor Gearboxes for Moderno Ride-Ons

The pair of Paragon 775 motor gearboxes is $180 and fits all five Moderno models covered here. These gearboxes were built for ride-ons that use a "teardrop" style gearbox with a "clover" style wheel adapter, which is the setup on the Moderno lineup. We put hardened steel where teardrop gearboxes usually wear out (the pinion, first gear, and second gear cluster), added ball bearings to the first and final gears, and changed the gear ratio for more top speed than any other teardrop gearbox we sell.

The 775 motors have ball bearings at each end and are designed for up to 24 volts of SLA battery power, so they're a good match for Moderno's factory voltage. Each pair comes with adapters for different axle diameters and quick-change wire connectors.

A couple of details affect the install. The 775 motors are larger around than stock motors, so some bodies need a little trimming to make room. If your Moderno holds its stock 550 motors in place with a metal ring, the Paragon motor mounts are $18 for a set of two and use a larger ring sized for the 775s.

If you have a 4WD model, count your drive motors before you order. A pair of Paragons covers two gearboxes, so a 4WD Maverick X3, Outlander, Renegade, or all wheel drive G63 with a motor at each wheel needs two pairs to upgrade all four corners.

Titan Speed Control and the 35 Amp Breaker

The Titan Electronic Speed Control is $80 and replaces the stock controller in most imported ride-ons, including the Moderno lineup. It handles four 775 motors at up to 24 volts on 12 amp SLA batteries, works in 2WD and 4WD vehicles, and keeps your original pedals, shifter, and wiring.

Before ordering, pull up your stock controller and compare its plugs to the Titan, including the long, skinny white 7 pin connector. Matching plugs mean the Titan drops right in. Some cars' sound effects may change or stop working after the swap, though a separate MP3 or sound module won't be affected.

Faster motors also pull more current, and the small stock breaker by the battery usually can't keep up. The 35 amp self-resetting breaker is $15 and replaces it, so the car doesn't keep cutting out under load.

If your plugs don't match the Titan, the MLToys Ride-On Speed/Brake Control v2.0 is the universal option at $185 to $200. It works in any brand of ride-on with two 550 or 775 motors on 18 to 24 volts and adds a variable throttle pedal, a variable brake pedal, and an automatic safety brake. You can compare both in our electrical upgrades.

Better Batteries for More Speed and Run Time

A better battery adds both speed and ride time, and it's the least expensive upgrade on this list. The 24 volt 9 amp battery set is $59.98 and fits in place of 24 volt batteries rated 7, 7.2, 8, and 9 amps, which covers the 24V 7Ah pack that comes in the Outlander.

SLA batteries vary a lot from brand to brand. The batteries that ship with most ride-ons give less speed and run time than ours, even when the amp rating on the label is the same. Our set uses your existing battery connector and wiring, and your original charger still works. If you're replacing a single 24V battery with this two-battery set, add a fuse holder to bridge the positive terminal on one battery to the negative terminal on the other.

If you'd rather buy batteries one at a time, the 12 volt 9 amp battery is $29.99, and two of them make a 24 volt setup. For more on how voltage affects a ride-on, our 12V vs. 24V guide covers the differences.

What to Check Before You Upgrade a Moderno

A few minutes of checking before you order saves a return later. If you have the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, confirm which version you own, because these upgrades will not work on the drift or brushless motor models. On every model, compare your stock speed controller's plugs to the Titan before buying it.

Parent remotes deserve some thought too, especially on models built for kids as young as 3. After a Titan swap, the remote has to be paired to the new controller using your car manufacturer's instructions, and that pairing fails about 90% of the time. There's no replacement remote available, so plan on your child driving the car on their own after the upgrade. If you're unsure about any of it, a 30 minute video call with ML Toys tech support costs $25 and can help you plan the build before you buy anything.

Lights and Accessories for Moderno Ride-Ons

Lights are a fun way to finish a Moderno build. Rock lights are $12.50 for four LED strips that light the wheels from above, and underglow body lighting is $12.50 for two 35" strips that tape under the sides of the car. Both run on 12 volts. On a 24 volt Moderno with factory lights, the light circuit is often already 12 volts, which you can check with a volt meter. If it isn't, the voltage reducer for LED lights costs $13 and steps 24 volts down to 12. More options are in lighting upgrades.

A faster car is a good reason to add a better belt. The four point safety harness is $24, gives the look of a race car seat, and is simple enough for kids to buckle on their own. It installs in about 10 minutes with a Dremel or similar cutting tool to slot the seat.

For the G63 and Lamborghini, the heavy duty car cover is $20.50 and measures 60" long, 34" wide, and 27" high, so measure your car to make sure it fits. G63 owners can also add stacked exhaust headers for $40, which come as a left and right set and screw, glue, or tape to the hood.

How Much Does a Moderno Speed Upgrade Cost?

A full Moderno speed build with Paragon gearboxes, a Titan controller, a 35 amp breaker, and a 24 volt 9 amp battery set costs about $335 for a two-motor car and about $515 for a 4WD model with four motors. These totals use current ML Toys prices before shipping and tax.

Build Parts Approximate total
Two-motor Moderno One pair of Paragon gearboxes ($180), Titan ESC ($80), 35 amp breaker ($15), 24V 9 amp battery set ($59.98) $335
4WD Moderno Two pairs of Paragon gearboxes ($360), Titan ESC ($80), 35 amp breaker ($15), 24V 9 amp battery set ($59.98) $515
Battery only 24V 9 amp battery set $59.98
Lights Rock lights ($12.50), underglow ($12.50), voltage reducer if needed ($13) $25 to $38

Keeping a Faster Moderno Safe

More speed means more supervision. We don't recommend adding speed to any ride-on until your child is ready to drive it on their own, and that matters even more on a Moderno, since the upgrade will most likely take the parent remote out of the picture. Give new drivers plenty of open space, keep them off the street, and use the harness every ride. Our post on ride-on vehicle safety covers more of what to watch for.

To get started, open your model's page in the Moderno lineup, then pull the cover off your stock speed controller and compare its plugs to the Titan. Count how many drive motors your car has, and you'll know exactly how many Paragon pairs to order.
