Step 2: Clean the Ride-On Toy Thoroughly Before It Goes Into Storage

This step is easy and most people skip it. Dirt, mud, and grass clippings hold moisture. Moisture sitting against plastic, wiring, and metal over months of winter leads to corrosion, staining, and degradation that wouldn't have happened on a clean car.

Not every family needs to follow every step above with equal urgency, and it's worth being honest about that.

If you're in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, or anywhere that sees extended temperatures below 20°F, every step in this guide is non-negotiable. Your battery will not survive a garage winter. Your connectors will corrode. Do all of it.

If you're in the mid-Atlantic or Pacific Northwest, where winters are wet but not extremely cold, the battery storage guidance still applies fully. Moisture and partial discharge are your main enemies, not extreme cold. Focus on battery removal, the monthly recharge, and making sure the car stays dry and covered.

If you're in Texas, Florida, Southern California, or another mild climate, your risks are lower but not zero. Batteries still self-discharge over months of sitting unused. A car left in direct sun in a Florida garage through winter will have faded plastic and degraded tires by spring. Remove the battery, store it indoors, and cover the car. The rest of the steps are still worth doing but less urgent.

The one thing that applies everywhere equally: never store the battery dead. That rule has no climate exceptions.

Storing a Modified or Upgraded Power Wheels for Winter

If your ride-on toy is stock, the steps above cover everything. If it's been modified, there are a few additional considerations worth knowing about.

Upgraded batteries (12V high amp-hour, 18V, or 24V): The storage guidance is the same as stock, fully charged, indoors, recharge every 4 to 6 weeks. The difference is that a higher capacity battery takes longer to fully charge, so make sure you're giving it the full 12 to 14 hours and not pulling it early. An 18V or 24V setup going into storage at 80% instead of 100% will self-discharge to a dangerous level faster than a fully charged battery would.

Disconnect the battery completely from the soft start module before storing. Lithium batteries stored at 100% charge for months degrade measurably faster. How to Get Your Power Wheels or Ride-On Toy Ready for Spring

When the weather starts turning, here is exactly how to bring the car back out of storage the right way.

Step 1: Reinstall or Replace the Power Wheels Battery

Pull the battery out of wherever you stored it indoors and give it a full charge before reinstalling. Even if you topped it off every 4 to 6 weeks as recommended, give it one more full charge cycle before the first ride.

Once fully charged, reinstall it in the vehicle and reconnect the wiring. If the battery won't charge, charges but drops to empty in under 20 minutes, or the car feels noticeably slower than it did last fall on a full charge, the battery is done. Don't troubleshoot a dead battery. Replace it.
